Local business promotion
Win your own street first.
For a clinic, a repair service or a showroom, the whole internet is irrelevant. What matters is the three businesses Google shows on a map when somebody two kilometres away searches “near me”.

What gets done
- Google Business Profile setup
- Correct primary category
- Services & products listed
- Photos, posts & Q&A
- Citation clean-up
- Review generation system
- Real locality pages
- LocalBusiness schema
The map pack sits above the first organic result. Three businesses get shown. If you are fourth, you are effectively invisible to someone standing on the street with a phone — no matter how good your website is.
01 The ranking factors
What decides those three slots.
Google names three, and one of them you cannot change. That is fine — almost nobody optimises the other two properly.
How close you are to the person searching. You cannot move your shop, so this is the constraint you plan around: you will win searches near you and lose ones across the city, and that is normal.
Does your profile say you do the thing they searched for? Primary category, secondary categories, service list, description and the products section. This is where most profiles are half-empty and lose to a competitor who filled theirs in.
How well known you appear to be: review count and recency, citations across directories, mentions elsewhere on the web, and how your website performs organically. The slow compounding half.
02 Google Business Profile
Your most important page isn’t on your site.
For a local business, more people will see your Google profile than your homepage. It usually gets a tenth of the attention.
- Verification
- Unverified profiles do not rank. If yours was never verified, or verification lapsed, nothing else on this list matters until it is fixed.
- Primary category
- The single highest-leverage field in the whole profile. “Diagnostic centre” and “medical laboratory” return different results — picking the wrong one costs you the searches you want.
- Services & products
- Every service listed individually with its own description. This is what Google matches against long-tail searches, and it is empty on most profiles.
- Photos
- Exterior so people can find the door, interior so they know what to expect, the team, and the work. Added regularly, not once at setup.
- Posts & Q&A
- Offers, updates and the questions you get asked on every call, answered on the profile itself. Free real estate almost nobody uses.
- Messaging & booking
- Call button pointing at a phone somebody answers, WhatsApp where appropriate, and hours that are actually correct on holidays.

03 Reviews
Close to decisive.
Two businesses with identical services, one with visibly more recent reviews. That is not a fair fight, and review volume also feeds map pack ranking directly.
What actually works
- Ask at the right moment. Right after the job is done and the customer is happy — not a week later by email.
- Make it two taps. A direct review link by WhatsApp, not “search for us on Google”.
- Ask everyone, consistently. A system beats a burst. Ten a month forever beats forty in one week.
- Reply to every one. Including the bad ones, calmly. Future customers read the replies more carefully than the reviews.
What gets you suspended
- Buying reviews, in bulk or one at a time
- Reviews from staff, family or the same IP address
- Offering a discount in exchange for a five-star
- Forty reviews in one afternoon after two years of silence
- Review gating — only asking the happy ones
04 Locality pages
Real pages, not doorways.
There is a right way and a way that gets your whole site penalised, and they look identical to someone selling you the second one.
A page for a locality you have never worked in is a lie a customer will discover on the phone. Cover what you genuinely cover.
Different landmarks, different travel time, different jobs done there. If the only change is the city name, it is a doorway page.
Five real locality pages outperform thirty thin ones, and they do not put the rest of your site at risk.
Where both the service and the area are searched together and you genuinely do it, that combination deserves a page. Not every permutation does.
Reachable from the main navigation or a service page, not orphaned pages that only exist for a sitemap.
Work done in that area, reviews from customers there, and a map. That is what turns a location page into a page somebody enquires from.
Costing
Priced by the state you’re in.
A profile that has never been claimed and one that just needs reviews are different jobs. The setup and clean-up phase is quoted separately from any ongoing work.
- One-off profile and citation clean-up
- Optional ongoing posts, reviews and reporting
- Month-to-month, no annual contract

05 FAQs
Local questions.
Including the two nobody wants to hear the honest answer to.
Getting found by people near you who are ready to act now — the map pack at the top of a “near me” search, your Google Business Profile, local directory citations, reviews, and pages that actually target the areas you serve.
Usually an incomplete or unverified Google Business Profile, the wrong primary category, inconsistent name-address-phone details across the web, or no reviews. All four are fixable, and all four are checked first.
For a local business, they are close to decisive. Two businesses with identical services and one with visibly more recent, genuine reviews is not a fair fight — and review volume also feeds map pack ranking.
No. Fake reviews get profiles suspended, and a suspended profile costs more than the reviews were worth. What works is asking real customers at the right moment and making it a two-tap process — which is something I can set up for you.
Only for areas you genuinely serve and want customers from. Ten thin, near-identical location pages hurt more than they help — Google calls those doorway pages and they put the rest of your site at risk. A smaller set of real, useful pages performs better.
